Social Skills Groups
Jerry Lindquist, Ph.D., OTR in association with Irvine Therapy Services and the Speech and Language Development Center offers Social Skills Groups for Children and Adolescents
The learning of social skills follows a developmental progression. We begin as young children to learn to share and wait and take turns. Older children must know how to negotiate and compromise. Adolescents need to manage anger and conflict. Some children have not mastered these basic abilities needed to get along with others.
We offer a multidisciplinary group therapy format for children of all ages having trouble with peers or family. Groups are task oriented, guided by psychologists and occupational therapists, and are designed to lead to the mastery of skills necessary for success in the social world. Children will learn developmentally appropriate coping skills necessary to get along with others.
These might include:
• sharing
• turn taking
• cooperating
• coping with anger and reducing conflict
• verbalizing feelings
• understanding body language
Groups are ongoing. Space is available for the following ages:
7 to 9 year-olds
9 to 11 year-olds
11 to 13 year-olds
teenagers
Groups are available for boys and for girls. Only the teenage group is co-educational.
Groups are also available for children 2 to 5 years of age with atypical social-emotional development.
We ask for a ten week commitment. Fees are $40.00 per group meeting, $350.00 if paid in advance. Group meetings are one hour, fifteen minutes in length.
Every tenth meeting is a parent meeting. This is to inform parents about progress, changes, problems, etc. Parents are important in this process of social skill development. They can help the child practice social coping skills in all areas of their lives.
